Karabo arrived at Lambano Sanctuary Children’s Home at age 4, very energetic and full of life.

Mama Viv, sister to Lyn Croote Ceo of Lambano and House Manager, recalls ‘I must’ve called Karabo’s name about 50 times that day. ‘Karabo be careful. Karabo gets down from there’ Vivian says. Shortly after, she discovered that something must be wrong with his eyes. Mama Vivian traveled to several health facilities to test Karabo’s eyesight. She recalls taking him to a professor at a certain institute ‘She threw hundreds and thousands into the palm of her hand ’ Karabo’s intuitive behavior debunked his half sightedness then and there However, Mama Viv did not give up. Eventually, she sent Karbo for extensive testing at Johannesburg General Hospital only to discover he had visual impairment due to pigmentary retinopathy.

Karabo has been to several schools for both the blind and assistant learning. However, one thing is clear Karabo remains independent, full of tenacity and entrepreneurial. Karabo absolutely loves woodwork, a hobby he had learned at school. Karabo has since handcrafted a coffee table, photo frames, and more. Unfortunately, due to Health and Safety Compliance, it would not be possible for Karabo to work in a factory. However, Karabo’s dream is to do woodwork full time. This could only be possible through the help of mentorship both by a fully able carpenter and partially sighted carpenter.

Karabo says ‘I would like some tools to work with – I don’t want to do nothing with my life, I love woodwork’

The Biogen Half Marathon and SmectaGO 5km Fun Run presented by Momentum Multiply for 2026.
The race starts in Riley Road in Bedfordview at 06:00am and the SmectaGO 5km Fun Run presented by Momentum Multiply will also be timed, starting 30 mins later at 06:30am on the same day on Sunday 11 January 2026.

Funds will also be raised for the two race charities: Lambano Sanctuary and the Namaqua Dog and Donkey Foundation. All donations by runners, over and above their entry fee, will be matched by the Dis-Chem Foundation.
